>> A COURSE IN BAYESIAN ECONOMETRICS <<

Instructor: Gary Koop   Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland
http://personal.strath.ac.uk/gary.koop/
Course Description: The course will introduce the basic ideas and tools of Bayesian econometrics. It will cover Bayesian theory, Bayesian analysis of the linear regression model and extensions of the regression model. The first part of the course will be focused on posterior simulation. Different posterior simulators such as Monte Carlo integration, Gibbs sampling and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) will be introduced. The second part of the course will consider some macroeconomic applications. We will begin with a survey of Bayesian approaches to univariate time series analysis including state space models. Finally, we will discuss extensions of these which are popular in the recent macroeconomic literature. These extensions will be discussed through some research papers.

For further details on this workshop, please contact Maree Apolloni m.apolloni@uq.edu.au

Please Note: John Geweke is giving a seminar at the School on Wednesday, 16th July 2008.

Pre-Conference Workshop - Hamilton Island
(20 - 21 July 2008)

Two short courses will be run prior to ISBA2008. They will be one day courses, running on Sunday afternoon, 20th July, and Monday morning, 21st July 2008.

>> HIERARCHICAL BAYESIAN MODELLING FOR SPATIALLY REFERENCED DATA <<

Instructor: Sudipto Banerjee  School of Public Health, Division of Biostatistics, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA
sudiptob@biostat.umn.edu
http://www.biostat.umn.edu/~sudiptob/
Course Description: In recent years there has been enormous growth in interest in the analysis of spatial data, and the development of statistical methodologies that interact with geographical information systems (GISs). This short course will introduce students to the nature of spatial data and the Bayesian hierarchical models that can help to analyse such data. The course will cover a blend of theory, applications, and software rel ated to diverse spatial and spatiotemporal modelling. In particular, the use of R packages (geoR and spBayes) and the BUGS software will be demonstrated.

There are no specific prerequisites for this course, although students exposed to some mathematical statistics and linear models will find the course more accessible. Anyone attending the ISBA 2008 conference with an interest in spatial data analysis is welcome to attend.

Course notes, datasets and computer programs will be made available on the website.

Course Outline:
*** Day 1: Essentials *** (Sunday, July 20th 2008)

>> BAYESIAN CORE: A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO COMPUTATIONAL BAYESIAN STATISTICS <<

Instructor: Christian P. Robert   Université Paris Dauphine and CREST, INSEE, Paris, France
xian@ceremade.dauphine.fr
http://www.ceremade.dauphine.fr/~xian

Course Description: In this one-day course, we will cover the first chapters of Bayesian Core (Springer-Verlag, New York, 2007, ISBN 0-387-38979-2)
2. Normal models
3. Regression and variable selection
4. Generalised linear models
5. Capture-recapture experiments
with the support of specific datasets for each chapter. The goal is to introduce the principles of Bayesian analysis through standard models and to build intuition on the construction of prior distributions as well as of inferential procedures, with a minimum amount of theoretical discussion and an emphasis on practical implementation. Due to the time constraint, the illustration via R programming will necessarily be restricted, but all R programmes are available on http://www.ceremade.dauphine.fr/~xian/BCS and can be downloaded in advance (as well as the slides).

Workshop Description: Complex computer models are now used to describe and predict many real-world phenomena such as climate, financial markets, biological systems and societies. But how accurate are these models? What data underpin them? Are simpler, faster emulators available?

This workshop presents a panel of international experts to discuss Bayesian statistical solutions to these questions. The workshop comprises presentations, tutorials and a discussion panel, making it suitable for beginners to experts.
